Charles Clarendon Ballou (1862-1928)
Charles Clarendon (C.C.) Ballou was born in Orange, N.Y. He fought in the Spanish-American War as well as in the Philippines during the ensuing insurrection, where he was awarded the Silver Star. Ballou later commanded the 92d Division – an African American unit – in France during World War I. His postwar service included regimental command at Fort George Wright, Wash., 1920-23. Major General Ballou died July 23rd, 1928 at Spokane, Wash. A transport ship for the U.S. Navy in World War II was named after him (the USS General C. C. Ballou (AP-157)).
