If you think Mamma will be hurt by my going, I won’t
To Bertha from Alice “Sally” – December 9, 1929
[Note: This letter contains the first reference to Frank Buckler, whom Bertha would marry the following year]

Spokane, Washington
Dear Bertha,
Yes or no, you settle it according to these suggestions. If you think Mamma will be hurt by my going, I won’t. I get in at 7:30 A.M. and will have all day there at home so maybe she won’t mind.
On the other hand, if you think Frank would be less disturbed by seeing me (or being seen) the first time with a crowd, it might be better to go.
I’d like to go, and if Mamma were included I wouldn’t hesitate a second and see no reason why I should be tired. Now you fix it either way. You probably have had a chance to see how Mamma will feel and I can’t go if she wouldn’t be happy.
